Head Clinical Unit (Medical) Grade 1 (Obstetrics and Gynaecology)

Experience:
A minimum of 3 years appropriate experience as Medical Specialist after registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Specialist in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
 
Minimum educational qualification:
An appropriate qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a specialist in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
 
Competencies (knowledge/skills):
Excellent track record of clinical, research and education skills at undergraduate and postgraduate level. Clinical experience with high-risk obstetrics, maternal medicine and ultrasound is required. Ability to achieve and maintain good interpersonal relations with staff, patients, and their families. Sound verbal and written communication skills as well as analytical and problem-solving skills. Experience with teamwork, planning, organizing and coordination of maternity services. The candidate must have sufficient clinical and academic skills to handle a large clinical workload, training, and supervision of under- and postgraduate students (registrars and fellows). Computer literacy in MS Word and Excel or similar, including the ability to use online resources relevant to the discipline (e.g. PubMed).
 
Duties (key result areas/outputs):
Manage the Maternity (Obstetric) services as Clinical Unit Head including Outpatient, Inpatient, Emergency and afterhours service. Reports to the Head of Clinical Department (General Specialist Services) for all duties performed. Provision of safe and efficient, cost-effective and appropriate health care as a specialist in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at general specialist level, with support to maternal medicine clinics and ward calls, and ultrasound. Education, teaching and training of fellows, medical students, medical personnel, junior colleagues and obstetrics and gynaecology registrars. Effective guidance and participation in, academic and research activities at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels within the clinical department. Clinical governance of specialist outreach services to district hospitals and district based services within Cape Town- metro east. Efficient administration and governance of general maternity services.

Registration with a Professional Council:

Note:
This is a joint staff appointment with the SU-FMHS.
 
Inherent requirements of the job:
Valid driver’s license. It will be expected of the successful Head: Clinical Unit to work commuted overtime, limited to 12 hours per week. Afterhours work will be done on the complete platform (including gynaecology). The incumbent will perform duties at Tygerberg Hospital and related departments at various hospitals, including hospitals served in their specific outreach programs (Khayelitsha, Helderberg, Karl Bremer, Eerste Rivier).
 
 
 
 
Remuneration:
Grade 1: R 1 976 070- R 2 097 327 per annum A portion of the package can be structured according to the individual's personal needs.
